On June 23, Alice Smith will perform at Highline Ballroom as part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival.  The NYC bred, singer-songwriter first made her debut in 2006 with For Lovers, Dreamers & Me.

Alice Smith is known for her four-octave vocal range, and even more for her unique stage presence.  She possesses a vocal balance similar to that of great singers of the past, managing to deliver songs with great intensity and a sense of elegance.

Her music is a blend of elements from many genres, integrating country, gospel, pop, orchestral arrangements, and more.  Despite the soulful aspect of her music and vocals, Smith doesn’t consider her music as soul.  When thinking of artists Smith admires, Björk specifically, she says, “I thought of her soul; her music made me contemplate her soul…It was never about the genre.  So I just came never to think of the idea of soul as being about a category.”

In the music industry, a world where reps shape and change artists in ways that would suit the label, Smith was constantly battling to be herself.  At one point, she had little control over her own music.  Smith now works with producer Syience and singer/songwriter Rebecca Jordan, so that her music may truly reflect her life experiences.

Smith takes a very personal approach to the subject matter in her music, introducing her own life experiences.  Her music is a union of exterior and interior–she is particularly interested in how things relate to the “self.”  In her music, she explores the experiences she’s had in relationships with other people, as well as the relationship with her inner self.

For the 50th Grammy Awards, Alice Smith was nominated for the Best Urban/Alternative category.  She has previously performed at venues such as Mercury Lounge, Joe’s Pub, and the Blue Note Jazz Club.  She has gained a following over the years, and many of her shows frequently sell out.

The Blue Note Jazz Club is celebrating its 30th Anniversary. The Festival features many prominent acts such as Dave Brubeck and Chris Botti.  Performances are held in venues throughout New York, with special shows hosted at the Blue Note.

Produced by Jill Newman Productions.
