Brooklyn’s premiere performing arts center, BAMcinѐmatek, is continuing their tradition of featuring film-series’ that celebrate the work of directors all around the world. This series, Polanski x3, pays homage to actor, producer, screenwriter and most importantly director, Roman Polanski. Known for his more popular titles The Pianist and Tess, Polanski’s directing career has been one of longevity and international acclaim.

Featuring three films spanning three decades all presented in 35mm, Polanski x3 will undoubtedly give its audience a superb look in to, who Polanski was a an auteur and actor. With dynamic themes like human betrayal and corruptibility, sexual insecurity and self-destruction, the three films chosen by the BAMcinѐmatek all touch on these subjects in different ways.

The BAMcinѐmatek will kick off the film-series with Pirates, the oldest of three films, is a comedy-adventure with gorgeous cinematography and classic pirate humor. Coming after a 7-year hiatus from directing films, Polanski returned to the director’s chair with Pirates, which was not only a shipwreck in the box office, but also was a complete financial failure. Yet, Pirates is still seen as a special film because of how rarely it’s been shown since its initial release.

Premiering after Pirates, The Tenant, a psychological thriller and horror film, is the last film of Polanski’s critically acclaimed “Apartment Trilogy” that consists of three somewhat disturbing horror flicks centered around the fear of the unknown. Starring as the lead role of Trelkowski, Polanski completes the trifecta by writing, directing and acting all in The Tenant. Labeled as one of Polanski’s most authentic and successful Polanski directed films, The Tenant is truly a classic work of art.

Rounding out the trio of films, Cul-de-sac, a tragic-comedy starring legendary horror actor Donald Pleasance, was only the second film in English Polanski directed and is remembered as one of his most pure works. While holding a plot that resembles many past horror films, Cul-de-sac also brings audiences an intense and stylish film riddled with dark humor. Remarkably, Polanski intertwines many different styles and genres together in Cul-de-sac while still creating one of his most notable pieces of work making Cul-de-sac the perfect film to wrap-up Polanski x3.
