Before embarking on their fourth year as the opening band for the Sporting Festival in Monte Carlo, Ty Stephens & SoulJaazz will first make a stop at the jazz landmark, the Birdland. The performance will include a funky mix of jazz, R&B and even a few Broadway show tunes as a tribute to theater, for the audience on June 27.

Stephens’ has won numerous awards including the 2006 JazzMobile/Anheuser-Busch Solo Vocal Competition, the 2002 International Songwriting Competition for the song “Somethin’ Strange” in the R&B/Blues category and the 1999 B.E.T’s Jazz Discovery for best vocal performance.

The band has tour around the world and recently returned from Vladivostok, Russia, where they performed as part of a cultural exchange program sponsored by the U.S. State Department and the local Philharmonic. In the fall they will return to Russia to host the Vladivostok Jazz Festival.

Over the years, Ty Stephens & SoulJaazz have opened for many major performing artists, including: Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Grace Jones, Charles Aznavour, Alicia Keys, Diana Ross, Tom Jones, Eric Clapton and Elton John. They have also released three studio albums so far: Musichameleon (1996), Deeper In Fantasy (2000) and Aquarian Mind (2006).

The year 2012 will be a big year for Stephens and his bandmates– Cummings, Jr. on Piano, Ron “Rondew” Monroe on bass, Tony Lewis on drums, and R.T. Taylor on guitar– as they prepare for a year of European touring to support their upcoming studio album.
