With age comes wisdom, grace and experience. But for Roswell Rudd, with age also comes the ability to astound his audience as his musical prowess exceeds all expectations. Rudd’s latest record deal with Sunnyside Records coincides with the celebration of his 75th birthday. His latest recording, The Incredible Honk, full of Rudd’s latest escapades, not only entertains listeners, but also surprises them. Rudd’s famous for his trombone legacy, but more importantly for his legendary work with jazz music.

Over time, Rudd has taken his study of music at Yale University to be more than just a degree. He has expanded his knowledge and practice to be an excellent role model for aspiring musicians, specifically trombonists and jazz lovers. The array of tunes on Rudd’s latest recording proves that he has always been optimistic towards new and various sounds. Rudd’s talent increased as he played alongside, and learned from, some of the greats: Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, and Steve Lacy.  His relationship with Shepp didn’t stop there though; Rudd currently co-leads an ensemble with Shepp.

The Incredible Honk features songs by a slew of artists, it’s sure to appeal to everyone. The album starts with a graceful rendition of one of Nina Simone’s classic songs, “Feeling Good” by Ivan Rubenstein-Gillis, which sets the eclectic tone for its predecessors. Other well-known artists featured include: David Oquendo, Michael Doucet, Emily Haines and more. Traditions are bent and broken as Wu Tong, a member of Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, puts his own twist on the original Irish song, “Danny Boy” featured in The Incredible Honk.

When he started teaching, both at Bard College and the University of Maine, Rudd began to assist Alan Lomax with several projects to further his potential as a famous musician. Rudd’s involvement with the world of academia never stopped; he continues to conduct master classes and workshops both in the United States and around the world. Not only has his teaching lived on, but also his touring hasn’t slowed down either. Rudd tours with MALIcool, the Mongolian Buryat Band, who also records with Sunnyside; he’s been a featured guest with a myriad of musicians, but not always jazz musicians—his mind is always open.

The Incredible Honk can be purchased here for just nine dollars! If you’re newly getting into jazz or an avid fan, Roswell Rudd is the man to listen to. Enjoy!
