After celebrating its one-year anniversary during a run at Nederlander Theatre, the Broadway production of Million Dollar Quartet is preparing to move to New World Stages this July for its final run of the season. The production held its final performance at Nederlander Theatre on June 12, and has played 489 regular performances and 34 preview performances to date.
Million Dollar Quartet tells the true story of a legendary jam session at Sun Records’ storefront studio in Memphis on December 4, 1956. The session, organized by famed “Father of Rock and Roll” Sam Phillips was the only time Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley would play together in their careers. It was a meeting of four of the music industry’s greatest all time talents, all at their creative prime and to this day it remains as one of the most memorable rock sessions in history.
Inspired by the atmosphere and attitude of this moment in musical history, the show features a collection of the greatest hits of each musician, including “Blue Suede Shoes”, “Great Balls of Fire”, “Folsom Prison Blues”, and “Hound Dog”. Chuck Mead arranged and supervises the music for the production.
Performers Lance Guest and Levi Kreis have earned Drama League nominations for Distinguished Performance for their portrayals of Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis, respectively. Kreis won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical as well as an Outer Circle Critics Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical.
Million Dollar Quartet is directed by Eric Schaeffer and is produced by Relevant Theatricals, John Cossette Productions, American Pop Anthology, Broadway Across America, and James L. Nederlander. The Broadway design team includes scenic design by Derek McClane, lighting by Howell Binkley, costumes by Jane Greenwood, and sound by Kai Harada.
The book was written by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux and received a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical. Other nominations include a Tony nomination for Best Musical, a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Musical Revue, and a Drama League nomination for Distinguished Production of a Musical.
Apart from the Broadway production, Million Dollar Quartet can be seen in Chicago, where it has been playing since 2008 and still packs fans into the Apollo Theatre. A national tour will launch in Cleveland in October, and a West End production is playing at the Noël Coward Theatre in London.
Exact ticketing information for the New World Stages run will be announced soon and can be found here.
