EXEGESIS: the belief that symbols, scientific thought, astronomical ideas, numerical ratios and conceptual art and architecture, can be expressed in sound.

With that said, Brooklyn based EXEGESIS is certainly not your typical jazz group, but rather an electronic jazz ensemble that likes to push musical boundaries. This is obvious with the release of their latest CD, The Harmony of the Anomaly – an innovative twelve track album infused with spontaneous, eclectic, and cutting edge blasts of musical energy that will take your senses on a wild ride.

The Harmony of the Anomaly is a follow-up to their well-received debut album, The Order of Chaos (2002), and this new offering does not disappoint. Bandleader and guitarist, Nick Demopoulos (best known for his work with NEA Jazz Master Chico Hamilton), is joined by drummer Tomas Fujiwara, and bassist Danton Boller (formerly of the Roy Hargrove Quintet) with guest appearances by Gretchen Parlato on vocals and drummers Greg Gonzalez, Mark Guiliana, Robert Perkins, and Mark Ferber. Together, this talented lineup of experimentalists have created a masterpiece, marking a new generation of jazz.

While the group is influenced by Middle Eastern and twentieth century classical/electronic music, The Harmony of the Anomaly features the group’s own blend of heterogeneous soundscapes including electronic jazz, live samplers, interactive music software, complex compositions, and great improvisation. Bandleader Nick Demopoulos adds, “I can’t think of many recent jazz recordings that take full advantage of all the software instruments, editing possibilities, pedals and sound manglers that there are to offer, but EXEGESIS whole heartedly and unabashedly embraces all these things. That’s how this album and this band are unique.”

The band returns home to the Big Apple on Sunday, September 18th at DROM (85 Avenue A) for the CD Release Concert of The Harmony of the Anomaly.  Demopoulos comments, “When we play in the city it’s easier to bring all our gear, pedals, and computers to the show and go all out!”  Demopoulos will even be showcasing his very own instrument that he created called “The Smomid” (String Modeling Midi Device). Therefore, catching a live performance of this cutting-edge band in action should not be missed!  Tickets can be purchased for just $10 at www.dromnyc.com.  Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm.
