The Trio Will Perform From Their New CD
In honor of jazz, the Jazz Standard, a premier jazz club in New York City, is offering a stellar line-up of classic jazz musicians for the month of August. One of the highlights will be The Cyrus Chestnut Trio, which includes bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Neal Smith, will perform new music from their latest work, Journey.
From August 25 – 28, the Cyrus Chestnut Trio will bring their gospel and blues infused-jazz to the Jazz Standard stage to delight fans with their warm and inspirational sound. The trio is based around their lead pianist Cyrus Chestnut, who began his music career at the age of five and performed the first time when he was seven for his church. It has been a steady progression since then for Chestnut to master piano playing, music training and performing. Known for his whimsical and witty approach to notes and chords has made Chestnut stand the test of time and be considered by most as one of the best jazz pianist of his generation.
With seven albums released under Atlantic and a long list of features with some of jazz’s biggest superstars like Dizzy Gillespie and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, Cyrus Chestnut has undoubtedly made his mark on the genre of jazz. Dan Rodricks of The Baltimore Sun describes Chestnut’s unique style, “His new recording shows why many regard Mr. Chestnut as the best pianist of his generation. One hears in his smart stylings not only the gospel sounds at the root of his very being, but classic – some say nostalgic – jazz adorned with utterly uninhibited improvisations, flashes of pop and bop, whimsy and wit.”
In their newest album, Journeys, the Cyrus Chestnut Trio carry on their creation of compelling jazz music. 20 years in to his career of jazz pianist, Cyrus Chestnut continues to push the limits of jazz and his approach to the piano, yet remains classic, timeless and undeniably soulful. But Cyrus isn’t all the group has to offer. Bassist Dezron Douglas, from Hartford, Connecticut, has been playing the bass since the age of nine and has traveled all over the world sharing his classic African American music. The trio’s drummer Neal Smith, from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, teaches drummer students at the Berklee College of Music and has shared the stage with many well recognized artists such as Anita Baker and Isaac Hayes.
