Fall On Your Sword’s Hypnotic Score
“Another Earth” is about the lives of Rhoda Williams, a young woman accepted into MIT’s astrophysics program and John Burroughs, a composer at the height of his career, following the discovery of another planet–a second Earth, identical even in the people who inhabit it.
The film premiered in the 2011 Sundance Festival earlier this year, winning an award and gaining much praise. On July 22, the film was set for limited release and continued to receive favorable reviews.
More notable than the film’s reception is the level of praise and recognition for the film’s soundtrack, scored by Fall On Your Sword. The score ranges from powerful, almost danceable synthesized tones, to the more tranquil and haunting melodies of the piano and strings. Fall On Your Sword’s score is diverse, but it manages to maintain the same undercurrent of tension throughout. Certain tracks heighten the suspense and menacing presence with inharmonious, clashing sounds. Even the seemingly peaceful track “Forgive,” with its swelling cello, reveals a lingering sadness to gently remind the audience of a tragic event. Overall, Fall On Your Sword presents a hypnotic, diverse, and thoughtful score.
Fall On Your Sword comprises of Will Bates and Phil Mossman, who currently work and reside in Brooklyn. Will Bates studied composition and jazz saxophone in the University of Westminster and the Royal Academy of Music in the UK. Bates collaborated with famous artists such as Roy Ayers and Paul McCartney as a saxophonist, and he is now an award winning composer, having previously scored “You Won’t Miss Me” and David Kaplan’s “Play.” Bates also created the first of many Fall On Your Sword youtube videos, with “Shatner of the Mount” being one of their best known.
Philip Mossman was member of Andrew Weatherall’s The Sabres of Paradise during the post-rave era in the UK. Afterwards, he collaborated with David Holmes on productions for bands/artists such as U2, Manic Street Preachers, and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Mossman, like Bates, had experience scoring films with “Out Of Sight” and “Ocean’s Eleven.” Mossman later joined LCD Soundsystem and performed with them for five years before quitting.
In 2008, Bates and Mossman met and worked on a soccer boot commercial that won the Cannes Gold Lion Award as well as the Gold Clio Award. Within a year of their launch in 2010, Fall On Your Sword have scored five full-length feature films, including “Another Earth.”
Another Earth by Fall On Your Sword was released on July 19.
