Kasey Chamber’s Storybook
Australian Singer Brings Her New CD to City Winery
Kasey Chambers is an Australian country singer-songwriter. She is the daughter of steel guitar player Bill Chambers, and the sister of musician and producer Nash Chambers.
The award-winning country singer returns to the U.S. this summer with a brand new run of tour dates in conjunction with the worldwide release of Storybook. The fifteen song release is a collection of songs that inspired Kasey to become a musician.
In her words, “this album is a collection of songs and tributes to artists who have influenced me from when I was a small child up until now. I can honestly say that I would not be who I am today without the music from these incredible singer/songwriters and their inspiration.”
The album is the musical accompaniment to Kasey’s autobiography, A Little Bird Told Me, which was recently published by Harper Collins in Australia. On Storybook, Kasey works her magic on gutsy, soulful tunes hand-picked from the iconic songbooks of Gram Parsons, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, John Prine, Townes Van Zandt and more.
Encore caught up with her and discussed her new CD and her show at City Winery.
E: Where did you grow up?
KC: I grew up in the outback of Australia a place called a Nullarbor Plain, living in our car while my dad hunted for a living.
How/when did music enter your life?
Because we lived in such a remote area we had no form of entertainment except for my Dad playing song to us on his guitar around the campfire. This is one of my earliest memories.
Did you pick the country genre or did it pick you?
I was only ever exposed to country music as a child, because we no TV or radio, so I only ever heard the music my Mum and Dad listened to, which was, Hank Williams, Carter Family, Bob Dylan, Gram & Emmy Lou, etc…
How did your latest CD , Storybook, come about?
I spent three years writing my autobiography, and wanted to put an album with the book, covering all the artists that had influenced me over the years.
Can describe what these musicians that you have covered on the CD mean to you?
All these musicians , songwriters and songs have inspired me, gotten me through hard times and some have even changed my life.
What was it about their music that inspired you to be a musician?
Sometimes it was about the lyrics, sometimes their melodies, and sometimes just the artist was a role model and how I looked up to them.
Is there one song/songwriter that has had more of an influence than any other?
Lucinda Williams has been my biggest female influence in music. My Dad took me to see her at age 14 and I was never the same again!
Can you tell us what you have in store for your concert at the City Winery?
We will be playing a little bit of everything, from way back in The Captain days, all the way thru to my latest albums. I have been trying a few brand new songs as well, and some of my favorite covers.
What would you like the audience to walk away with from your concert?
Lots of merchandise… Hahaha… I hope people come away from the concert feeling like they know me a little better as a person, not just as a singer songwriter. I love the fact that I have a job that allows me to share my life story with people.
Kasey is appearing at the City Winery, Aug, 11.
