Like most nerdy white boys in their 20s, I’m a huge fan of both The Wonder Years and Freaks and Geeks. The former got me through the summer between middle and high school, thanks to repeats; the latter made me wish I had watched the show when it originally aired, rather than on DVD years later. And that someone in my school looked like Lindsay Weir.
So, when I saw the description of Adam Wade’s “What Ever Happened to the Nerds,” I was sold. It reads, “It’s like watching the characters of The Wonder Years and Freaks and Geeks all grown up. Coming-of-age tales of love, lost, regret, and redemption.” Let’s see: Two cult shows, check. Coming-of-age, check. Love and regret, check. It’s got everything a nerd like myself needs—except Summer Glau.
The tales of woe (and possibly Star Trek) happen at the Magnet Theater (254 W. 29th St.) tonight at 8:30 p.m. The event is hosted by Wade, who deserves comedic props for winning the Moth’s StorySlam a record 15 times. He also appeared on the ESPN.com web sitcom, Mayne Street, and ESPN’s Classics Classic Now, proving that you can be both a nerd and sports fan. Also performing at “Nerds” are Jim O’Grady, Kelly Buttermore, Jed Teres, Brigid Boyle and Armando Diaz.
Tickets cost $5 and more information can be found at the Magnet’s website.
