After more than six months of cold weather, there’s no doubt that New Yorkers are ready to come out and play while the sun’s shining. Many of you will likely enjoy this season’s festivities at Central Park’s SummerStage or head to Coney Island for Siren Festival. But don’t forget about one weekly party in Long Island City that occurs throughout July and August: Warm Up at P.S.1 MoMA. What sets this summer concert series apart from the others, besides the fact that it’s held in one of the largest exhibition spaces in United States, is that there’s so much to do. It allows New Yorkers to enter the world of modern art and architecture.
Every year, the Museum of Modern Art and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center hold a series of competitions to see who can best showcase their architectural vision, with the winner allowed to design the set for Warm Up. This year’s winner is New York-based firm Solid Objectives – Idenburg Liu (SO – IL), whose “Pole Dance” sounds naughtier than it actually is. In fact, the design is quite wholesome, focusing mainly on shade, water and seating (three things we can’t get enough of). The design consists of flexible pipes connected to a system of netting, with yoga balls covering the netting to protect the crowd from the sun. Both the poles and netting are connected to a speaker system, and when the poles sway, it creates a sound that emanate through the speakers. To incorporate water and seating, an abstract shaped swimming pool with raised edges have been placed in the courtyard.
P.S.1 is sparing no expense in making sure you’re comfortable during their events, as there also water stations throughout the courtyard and a café, which offers salads, sandwiches, beer, wine and other goodies at reasonable prices. Oh, and did I mention their homemade sorbets?
Let’s also not forget the real reason we’re attending: the music. Here’s a full schedule of performances:
