These are troubled times and the Citizens Band knows it. Formed in 2005, the troupe, which performs a tantalizing mix of cabaret, aerial ballet, acrobatics and plain-old theater camp, marks its debut at Spiegelworld with The Panic Is On. Set in a bomb shelter with spontaneous rumblings of explosions in the background, the show, their sixth original to date, covers topics like immigration, xenophobia and war. Performers weave these themes through the show with songs like “Immigrant Song,” “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” and “Hard Times Come Again No More.” But it’s not all bad news—they swing from the chandeliers in opulently gaudy vintage costumes of days gone by, too. Combining a perfect blend of politics, nostalgia and beauty, the show ultimately leaves the audience with an uneasy, uplifted feeling.
The troupe is also famous for featuring some well-known, unexpected faces (like actress and singer Zooey Deschanel in past performances). This time around Nina Persson of the Cardigans joins the madness.
