London-based Israeli songstress Mor Karbasi is more than a magnificent performer and gifted songwriter—she’s a musical historian. Descended from Moroccan and Persian Jews, Karbasi brings to life songs from as far back as 1492 sung in the Ladino language (spoken in Spain at the time of the Inquisition), but also sings in Spanish and Hebrew. Classically trained to play the piano, she accompanies herself but also adds the talent of guitarist Joe Taylor, who joined her act three years ago and has become an integral part of the music. Having just released her debut album last spring, Karbasi is ready to take the world music scene by storm. Her haunting vocals are the perfect sound track for a chilly fall afternoon.
