Was watching Leonardo DiCaprio for two-and-a-half in Inception not enough for you? Do you prefer your Leo with wavy hair and lean physique, rather than the Leo of now, who can’t seem to lose his baby fat? Us too, which is why we’ll be at tonight’s screening of Romeo + Juliet at McCarren Park, as part of the L Magazine‘s SummerScreen Series.
When Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet came out in 1996, Claire Danes, who played Juliet, was arguably the biggest star of the movie, or at least the one with a promising career. Leo, a.k.a Romeo, had hit it big with 1993′s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, which earned him a best supporting actor Oscar nomination, but then he starred in a bunch of crappy movies (The Foot Shooting Party, The Quick and the Dead, etc.) and made the most out of his party boy image.
Danes, on the other hand, was critically beloved for her role as Angela Chase on My So-Called Life, one of the greatest one season shows of all-time. It only lasted 19 episodes, but that was enough time for her to earn a Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series nomination at the Emmys. But no one watched the show and it got canceled. Her next role (and first film appearance) was playing Beth March in Little Women, which, unlike My So-Called Life, was liked by critics and financially successful.
Then everything changed. In 1997, Leo starred in that movie about a big boat, and has since become one of Hollywood’s most famous actors, thanks to Catch Me If You Can, Gangs of New York, The Departed and Inception, among many others. Danes, on the other hand, hasn’t had a role nearly as good as Angela Chase, or even Juliet. Sadly, she’s probably now most famous for being the girl who “stole” Billy Crudup away from his then-pregnant girlfriend, Mary Louise-Parker. Her Gap commercial was cute, though.
Anyways, come to McCarren Park tonight and pour a 40 on the ground for Claire Danes’ career. Gates open at 6 p.m., and there will be performances by Hank and the Cupcakes (6:15) and Noun (7:15). For more information, please click here.
Also, look for an apperance from Paul Rudd as Count “Dave” Paris in the movie.
