Have you heard about this? Evidently there was some oil spilled in the Gulf of Mexico, and by “some,” I mean hundreds of millions of gallons. People have been killed, habits destroyed and the Golf Coast is expected to lose nearly $23 billion in tourism, which will affect thousands of hardworking individuals, all because of our friends at BP.

Now you’re probably depressed (it could have been worse, though; I could have linked to a photo of baby bird covered in oil…) and wondering what you can do to help. Here’s one idea: City Winery (155 Varick St.) is hosting “Reclaim the Coast,” three nights of benefit concerts to raise funds for rebuilding and restoration relief along the Gulf Coast.

Tonight, July 23, is the first of the three shows, and noted musician and activist Pete Seeger will be performing. Rumor has it he’ll be singing a new song called “Drill Baby Drill…Spill Baby Spill.” Something tells me it’s going to be anti-BP.

All the proceeds from the concerts will be divided equally between the Gulf Restoration Network, under the umbrella of healthygulf.org, and Global Green, globalgreen.org. More information can be found here.
