Central Park’s Summerstage has been wonderfully all-over-the-place this season. Earlier this week, they hosted “The Daily Show and Friends,” the Flaming Lips will perform on Monday and today and tomorrow, the world-famous Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will do what they’ve been doing since 1958. Which is to say, dance.
In 1993, the dance company played at Central Park and drew over 30,000 people. They’re hoping to recreate (and hopefully add to) that number, which shouldn’t be a problem considering the performance is free. Ailey’s American Dance Theater is one of the nation’s most beloved dance troupes; they’re passionate about what they do and using their amazing talents to bring joy and freedom to a new audience, night after night. To quote Mr. Ailey himself, “Dance is for everybody. I believe that the dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people.”
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will be appear at the Main Stage in Central Park today, July 23, and tomorrow, July 24, at 8 p.m. Admission is free. More information can be found at SummerStage.org.
