In Encore‘s July issue, we wrote about Powerhouse Theater, the collaboration between New York Stage and Film and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. They’ve had a remarkable season so far, and the great work continues with On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever, which runs from July 29-August 1.

The musical is about a psychiatrist who falls in love with one of his patients, only to discover he’s really in love with her former personality. It originally opened on Broadway in 1965, with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Burton Lane, and while the source material was praised, the show itself was not. It closed in 1966, and wasn’t heard from again until 2000. Now it’s at Powerhouse with a slightly reworked plot by Peter Parnell (gender roles are supposedly switched) and directed by Michael Mayer of Spring Awakening fame.

The cast is made up of Brian d’Arcy James (Next to Normal), Anika Noni Rose (The Princess and the Frog), David Turner (The Invention of Love), Kerry O’Malley (Billy Elliot), Colin Hanlon (Rent) and Sarah Stiles (Avenue Q).

Beginning in January 2011, On a Clear Day will be at Off Broadway’s Vineyard Theater, meaning it might become the Next Big Thing. Although tickets for the Powerhouse performances are nearly all sold out, you should keep checking their website.
