You either love or hate Joanna Newson. There’s no in-between when it comes to an indie goddess with a squeaky, Joni Mitchell-esque voice who plays the harp and routinely records songs over 10 minutes long. Me, I happen to love Joanna, including all three discs of Have One on Me, which Encore has as the sixth best album of 2010 so far.

On St. Patrick’s Day, I saw her perform inside a church in Boston (naturally), and although she didn’t play the Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow classic “Picture,” as she did in Oakland with the Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold earlier this month, we did hear “Easy,” “Jackrabbits” and “Inflammatory Writ.” It was just as good as her albums, if not better.

Lest you think Joanna takes herself too seriously (after all, she has lyrics like, “It was a dark dream, darlin/It’s over/The firebreather is beneath the clover/Beneath his breathing there is cold clay, forever/A toothless hound-dog chocking on a feather), well, don’t. She’s surprisingly funny in concert and is currently dating SNL‘s Andy Samberg.

This is all basically a long way of saying that whether lover or hater-soon-to-be-turned-lover, you should go see Joanna Newson at Carnegie Hall on November 23. Just think of it: the world-famous Carnegie Hall, only days before Thanksgiving, and Joanna Newson. The perfect couple (sorry, Andy).

Tickets for the show go on sale Monday, August 9, at 11 a.m.
