Fifty years ago, Randy Weston released Uhuru Afrika, a tribute to the 17 African countries that gained independence in 1960. It’s probably the best album in the pianist’s great career, and the Apollo Theater and BMCC Performing Arts Center are celebrating the seminal record and Weston’s career with two can’t miss events.

This Wednesday, August 11, at 7:30 p.m., the Apollo Theater’s “Amateur Night,” which has launched the careers of Ella Fitzgerald and the Jackson 5, will be dedicated to the Brooklyn-born Weston, as part of the 36th Annual Harlem Week. During the pre-show, Harlem’s brightest students will be presented with scholarships for their academic and community leadership, and the actual event will honor Weston, who also got his start at the Apollo. Tickets cost $17, $22, $27 ($10 for students/seniors), and can be purchased here.

Later in the year, on November 13, the BMCC Performing Arts Center will present “Randy Weston’s Uhuru Afrika 50th Anniversary Concert Celebration.” The musical legend will perform with a 22-piece orchestra, featuring Candido Camero (percussion) and Charlie Persip (drums), who played on the original album. Tickets cost $25, $35 & $45 (students and seniors save $10), and can be purchased by calling 212-220-1460 or clicking here.
