Five years ago, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, best known for his roles in (500) Days of Summer and Inception, founded “hitRECord,” an online collaborative production company. According to hitRECord’s website, “Rather than just exhibiting and admiring each others work as individuals, we gather here to collectively work on projects together. Videos, writing, photography, music, anything—we call them all RECords.”

Basically, it’s a way for users to upload their work to a major platform, which can then potentially be seen by millions of viewers. Projects from hitRECord have already screened at Sundance, and Gordon-Levitt oversees the entire site from “a bank of computers in his home studio,” says a recent Details article.

If a project made on hitRECord turns out especially well, Gordon-Levitt talks to the “traditional entertainment industry” to turn the work into something that could potentially bring in money, which would then be shared among the artists who worked on the piece.

In the spirit of the company’s collaborative mission, Gordon-Levitt is currently looking for artists in the NYC area. On his Tumblr, Gordon-Levitt writes, “Calling all artists in the NYC area! As you might know, hitRECord putting on a series of live events this summer and I’m looking for some live acts to share the stage with me: Bands, Comedians, Poets, Clowns…anything! Show us and the hitRECord community what you got. Upload a video of you performing, and contribute it to this collaboration.” Submissions can be uploaded here.

The live events occur on August 16 and 30 and September 6 at Pianos (158 Ludlow St.). More information, including how to purchase tickets, can be found here. No word on whether he’ll recreate this.
