Digital Video, a Shoestring Budget, and One Porn Star…
…Soderbergh will not rest
To follow up the four-hour epic Che, Steven Soderbergh is giving filmgoers another quick fix. Like Bubble, Soderbergh made a digitally shot movie (this time filming took place over 21 days) sandwiched in between two high-budget films. Scenes were shot in an improvisational style with actors followed by two cameras, an aesthetic Soderbergh also practiced on Bubble.
The Girlfriend Experience stars real-life porn actress Sasha Grey, who plays a high-price Manhattan call girl. The story centers around her, her boyfriend, and her attempts to keep her gross income up. Grey has starred in over a hundred adult films, but this marks her first foray into the mainstream movie world. The title refers to what Grey’s character gives her clients: not just sex with a hooker, but the perfect girlfriend.
Ten years after launching modern-day independent cinema with Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Soderbergh is still exploring what society sees as taboo. Only this time he has replaced James Spader with the world’s oldest profession.
Opens May 22.
