Intrepid Museum Reopens With a Bang

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum has just undergone major renovations and is open for the public, bigger and better than ever. The renovations included an expansion of the Intrepid deck and the installation of the Exploreum, a completely interactive feature which combines over 18 exhibits on over 12,000 square feet to teach museum-goers about flying, living, and working on the Intrepid. Those who attend the museum can expect a hands-on experience as they climb a cargo net, learn to pick things up with space gloves, and even fly a plane in the flight simulator.

The Intrepid Museum is eager to kick off the reopening with a few events the weekend of July 17. First up is a free public viewing of the film Jaws on the flight deck of the Intrepid on July 17 at 8:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets as well as snacks and food for the movie, however alcohol is not permitted. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and seating is first come, first served, so guests are encouraged to come early for this fun, and free, event.

Also, the following days July 18–19, the Intrepid will be providing a number of events to honor Firefighter and Paramedic Appreciation Weekend. To kick off the weekend, the Intrepid will be hosting a ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the FDNY Marine Unit. The ceremony will take place on Saturday July 18th at 11:00 AM and will include a water show from FDNY water boats. The celebration will continue throughout the week with various rescue demonstrations and will conclude with the “Battle of the Boroughs,” a chow cook-off to see whose firehouse makes the best food. The battle will take place on Sunday July 19 from 12:00–3:00 p.m. All events are free with admission to the museum.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue, Manhattan). All ticket and exhibit information can be found at www.intrepidmuseum.org.
