Leon Russell began his career as a session man, working with the Rolling Stones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elton John, the Band, Frank Sinatra and many more rock ‘n’ roll greats. Now the 68-year-old singer songwriter/pianist/guitarist doesn’t need to play second fiddle (or second organist, as it were) anymore; he’s considered a great all by himself—and he’s playing this Saturday, August 21, at the Highline Ballroom.
Here are just a few of the song Russell either wrote or played on:
“Mr. Tambourine Man” by the Byrds
“River Deep—Mountain High” by Ike and Tina Turner
“Delta Lady” by Joe Cocker
“This Diamond Ring” by Gary Lewis and the Playboys
And some of his finest solo material:
“Song for You” from 1970′s Leon Russell
“A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” from 1971′s Leon Russell and the Shelter People
“Stranger in a Strange Land” from 1971′s Leon Russell and the Shelter People
“Tight Rope” from 1972′s Carney
His version of “Frosty the Snowman” with Dr. John is killer too, but it’s not on YouTube anymore.
Leon Russell plays the Highline Ballroom this Saturday, August 21, at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $27.50/$32 at the doors and can be purchased here.
