Brooklyn Farmacy
It’s like the 1950s never ended, complete with egg creams

I’m a sucker for old timey restaurants, the ones where you half expect the Beaver and Wally to walk through the door or have Jeff Daniels serve you (before everything turns from black and white to color, of course). But most places get the nostalgic feeling wrong. Instead of evoking the 1950s, it come across as pandering and commercial (see: Johnny Rocket’s).
But Cobble Hill’s Brooklyn Farmacy, located at 513 Henry Street, gets everything right. The building used to be a pharmacy (hence the name), but in May, it became a Farmacy, serving Brooklyn Egg Creams, pies, ice cream, homemade soda and other delicious deserts.
I ordered the cream soda and my friend the Brooklyn Egg Cream with pretzel rod for dipping.

It was perfect. It was her first egg cream (which is actually made of soda, milk and chocolate syrup, not eggs), and the first time I had ever tasted a soda that wasn’t made by Pepsi or Coke (or, once, RC…bad call). All around us were former-medicine jars that now hold locally-grown food, like peanut butter and syrup. Every last detail of Farmacy is perfect, right down to the friendly “Jerks” behind the counter who were friendly and ready to lend an ear to anyone sitting at the counter.
If you haven’t gone to the Farmacy yet and have kids, you should check out their “Back to School Egg Cream Socials,” with live music and $2 egg creams. Wednesday, September 8, from 3-5 p.m. is for grades K-5 and their family; Thursday, September 9, from 5-7 p.m. for 6-8; and Friday, September 10, from 8-10 p.m. for high school.
