Chico Hamilton’s career has been as varied and expansive of any working musician today. Born in Los Angeles in 1921, Hamilton was raised in the heart of the Central Avenue jazz scene as it was coming to fruition. Throughout the years the seminal jazz artist has played with the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday as well as backing the biggest voices in jazz music. Along the way Hamilton has helped foster the invention of jazz-fusion and worked steadily at an age when most musicians have long since retired.
On September 20, Hamilton marks a milestone in both his career and personal life as he plays a one-set gig at Le Poisson Rouge. The date is the drummer’s 88th birthday and he plans on celebrating in style. Playing with his backing band Euphoria, Chico Hamilton hits the stage at 9:30 p.m. to perform selections from his latest critically lauded album, Twelve Tones of Love. The album is one of Hamilton’s most creative to date, no small feat for a man whose sound defined a musical style and who happens to be an octogenarian.
The concert will take place at Le Poisson Rouge, located on the site of the historic Village Gate and offering concert-goers a one-of-a-kind experience in acoustics and design. To purchase tickets and for more information visit www.lepoissonrouge.com.
