September might be the easiest month to write a song about. It’s the end of the summer, when a lot of relationships end, and everything’s beginning to change, from the weather to the leaves. It’s kind of a depressing month actually, which is many of the songs listed below—and most songs about September, in general—are on the melancholy side. Enjoy!
#5. “Nightswimming” by R.E.M.
Nightswimming, remembering that night.
September’s coming soon.
I’m pining for the moon.
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
#4. “September in the Rain” by Guy Lombardo
To every word of love I heard you whisper,
The raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain.
Though spring is here, to me it’s still September
That September in the rain.
#3. “September of My Years” by Frank Sinatra
As a man who has always had the wanderin’ ways
Now I’m reaching back for yesterdays
‘Til a long-forgotten love appears
And I find that I’m sighing softly as I near
September, the warm September of my years
#2. “September Gurls” by Big Star
September gurls, I don’t know why
How can I deny what’s inside.
Even thought I keep away,
Maybe we’ll love all our days.
#1. “September Song” by Walter Huston
Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days I’ll spend with you
These precious days I’ll spend with you
