Matt Parker and Trey Stone, the comedy masterminds behind South Park, have done it again, at least according to the New York Post. In an article titled “Sure to Offend and Succeed” about Matt and Trey’s soon-to-be-released Broadway musical, The Book on Mormon, Michael Riedel writes, “Backers’ auditions for the show, which will open in March at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, were held this past week, and I know of several insiders who are still sore from laughing so hard.”
It gets better: “One of them is Stephen Sondheim, who was ‘doubled over’ a few times during the reading, says a source. Sondheim has said that he thinks the film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut is the best musical of the past 15 years.”
This doesn’t surprise me in the least. Even outside of the brilliant Bigger, Longer & Uncut, Matt and Trey have a great musical past with films like 1994′s Cannibal! The Musical and Team America: World Police (it’s virtually impossible to go a concert or sporting event and not hear at least one person shout, “America, fuck yeah!”
Below are some of their finest songs:
-“Shpadoinkle” from Cannibal! The Musical
-“That’s All I’m Asking For” from Cannibal! The Musical
-“Up There” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
-“La Resistance Medley” from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
-“Everyone Has AIDS” from Team America: World Police
