For the second year, curators at the Museum of Modern Art have chosen The Contenders, a collection of films released the previous year that they feel will be remembered and recognized as significant in the film canon at large. This year MoMA has selected a wide–ranging group of films to represent the best of 2009 and will present the collection in a 10–week series featuring twenty films.
The Contenders this year are disparate in subject matter, genre, origin and size but they have all been critically recognized and have the stuff it takes to stand the test of time. Amongst the chosen few are big budget features such as The Fantastic Mr. Fox which broke new ground in realistic CGI and Every Little Step, a documentary following the reality of Broadway auditions for the 2007 revival of A Chorus Line. The films represent both experiences from afar (French New Wave veteran Agnes Varda’s self–portrait exploring art, life, and the movies, The Beaches of Agnes, is a time capsule of European cinema) and close to home (the uniquely American The Hangover, a widely successful romp about hijinks in Las Vegas has also been chosen).
The Contenders will also host several screenings attended by the selected film’s director. Upcoming is a Q&A following the screening of the critically lauded The Hurt Locker with the film’s director Kathryn Bigelow. The screening and Q&A will take place on December 1st.
