FELA! Coming to Broadway

FELA!, the off–Broadway smash hit which redefined the musical theater genre, is making its triumphant debut on Broadway on November 23rd. The show itself, a blend between musical performance, dance and musical theater, is based upon the music and life of revolutionary Nigerian artist Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The two—the artist and the show that is based upon and around him—are inextricably tied and work to create an artistic endeavor that is both African–root music and American theatrical performance. Stirring concert piece and political statement. Sonically stunning and personally touching.

Fela himself was a man who wore many hats. He was a Nigerian born musician for whose family intended a medical career but whose own path led him to become an internationally recognized musician and activist. His creation of Afrobeat stemmed from influences as wide–ranging as James Brown and traditional Yoruba, and he became wildly popular all over the world. Fela was a superstar but chose to stay in Nigeria, working to fight the oppressive regime in place and becoming a voice for disenfranchised indigenous peoples all over the world.

FELA! is a musical treat which draws upon Fela’s expansive collection of over 70 albums. The show is directed and choreographed by Tony® Award–winner Bill T. Jones (Spring Awakening), with a book by Jim Lewis and Bill T. Jones. The title role is performed to endless praise by Sahr Ngaujah who won an Obie award for his portrayal off–Broadway. The music, the center of the heart–pumping show, is performed by Antibalas and other members of the NYC Afrobeat community. The show previously won the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical and has received resounding acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

Previews for the show will begin October 19th at the Eugene O’Neill Theater (230 West 49th Street) and officially opens November 23rd. Details and ticket information can be found at www.felaonbroadway.com.
