New Music Makes CONTACT
New York Philharmonic plays The Met
| | More
The New York Philharmonic has a new music director this season, and he’s ready to make changes in a bold way. At 42, Alan Gilbert is younger than most classical musical directors. He is also the son of two former violinists at the Philharmonic. This dichotomy of attributes is just a small example of the new direction Gilbert has hinted at with his inaugural program. Often noted for its staunch retaining of traditionalist musical notions, The New York Philharmonic is taking a turn for the innovative with its CONTACT music series this winter. The series is intended to introduce audiences to new composers and compositions, opening the door to contemporary music in a classical world.
The CONTACT series will feature a concert presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday, December 19 at 7:00 pm. New York Philharmonic Composer-in-Residence Magnus Lindberg will conduct the program, consisting of four New York Philharmonic commissioned works in their world premiere engagements. The works include: Game of Attrition by Arlene Sierra, MACUNAÍMA by Arthur Kampela, and new works by Marc-André Dalbavie and Lei Liang.
The concert, and the CONTACT series itself, will serve as a once in a lifetime opportunity for classical music lovers and new listeners to experience music that has never been heard before—a revitalization of one of classical music’s biggest (and greatest) players.
