The Music of Style Wars
The seminal graffiti film, featuring some amazing hip hop, screens tonight at BAM
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five

I’ve seen Style Wars, screening tonight at BAM, more times than I can count, mainly because it was shown seemingly every week during one of my college courses, for some reason. The graffiti stuff and scenes of New York, circa early 1980s, are pretty fascinating, but the thing that most intrigued me about the made-for-TV film was the music. With the exception of “The Wanderer,” it’s nothing but old school hip hop and funk, including Sugar Hill Gang and, masters of the genre, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
No official soundtrack was ever released (why?), but thanks to Ageing B-Boys Unite, we’ve got the full soundtrack listing. I’d strongly recommend checking out at least one of the links below, especially if you like listening to hip hop while watching a video of a still photo.
“The Wanderer” by Dion
“8th Wonder” by Sugar Hill Gang
“The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
“Beat Bop” by Rammellzee vs. K.Rob
“Pump Me Up” by Trouble Funk
“Feel the New Heartbeat” by the Treacherous Three
“Sing, Sing” by Gaz
“Give It Up or Turnit a Loose” by James Brown
“Rocket in the Pocket” by Cerrone
“Rockin’ It” by Fearless Four
Style Wars screens at 4:30, 6:50 and 9:15 p.m. tonight, September 9, with special guest appearances by many of the artists and b-boys from the film. Tickets can be purchased here.
