The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle

The Strokes

1. The Strokes are playing their first New York show in years tonight…but it’s a private event sponsored by Tommy Hilfiger. According to the New York Times, Hilfiger is holding a “thank you event at the Metropolitan Opera after his runway show at Lincoln Center. Some 1,200 invitations, which resembled a box of ivy, were sent out. The Strokes will perform, and Paul Sevigny will be the D.J.” As much as I love the Strokes, it’s best to avoid any event involving Paul Sevigny.

2. Mick Rock has more than lived up to his last name, taking photos of some of the genre’s biggest names, including Iggy Pop, Blondie and the Talking Heads. Tonight, though, he’ll be appearing at John Varvatos, the store of the fashion designer of the same name, to take your portrait. That sounds like a lot of fun—until you realize the fine print of the promotion’s poster: “With a purchase of $300 or more.”

So, to recap: ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!!!
