The Wooster Group, one of New York’s premier experimental theater companies, will hold a panel discussion to benefit writing collective Still Waters in a Storm. The discussion, entitled “What to Read If You’re Poor”, will feature acclaimed authors such as Peter Carey (Parrot and Olivier in America), Peter Hedges (The Heights), Richard Price (Lush Life), Adrian Nicole LeBlanc (Random Family) and Russell Banks (The Reserve), among others.

Still Waters in a Storm, based out of Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood, brings together writers of all ages in a supportive environment. All of the authors in the panel have participated in bringing the collective’s goals, such as responding to the world and people in it in a non-judgmental way through the written word, to fruition. By learning from these authors and reading their works, Still Waters’ participants are able to strengthen their own writing and find inspiration. The collective also offers remedial literacy instruction at all ages and levels.

The discussion will be held tonight, September 11, at 7 p.m. at the Performing Garage (33 Wooster St.). Guests are welcome to stay for drinks and conversation afterward. The suggested donation is $20, but any amount is appreciated. Contributions, all of which will go to Still Waters in a Storm, are payable by cash or check and will be accepted at the door. To make reservations, call 646-579-5025 or email stephenhaff@gmail.com.
