On Saturday, Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, scheduled to be released on December 22 in the U.S., took home the Venice International Film’s Festival biggest award, the Golden Lion. She became the first American-born woman to win the award. Below is a history of other Golden Lion-winning American films:
1980: Gloria (tied with Atlantic City)

Director: John Cassavetes
Plot: Gangster’s girlfriend goes on the run with a boy who’s being hunted by the mob.
Oscars: One nomination (Gena Rowlands, Best Actress), zero wins
FYI: John Adames, who plays the young boy, was nominated for a Razzie and tied with Laurence Olivier (The Jazz Singer).
1990: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
