Broadway’s Christopher Fitzgerald at Birdland Tonight
An evening of silliness, sentiment and songs
| | More
Two time Tony-nominee Christopher Fitzgerald performs in concert tonight as part of the “Broadway at Birdland” series. Encore recently sat down with Mr. Fitzgerald to discuss tonight’s event.
Can you describe “An Evening of Silliness, Sentiment and Songs”?
The evening is a lot like me: silly, serious, and always singing. It drives my wife crazy. The show is songs I have collected over the years. I described it to Jim Caruso at Birdland this way: “Spend an evening with Christopher Fitzgerald and some of his chums: Cole Porter, Ben Folds, and Gonzo. There will be such classic fare, such as “When I’m Not Near the Girl I Love” and “Something to Live For,” and such loony fare as “Josephina,” “Please No Lean-a On the Bell” and “Frankfurter Sandwiches.”
Can we assume this is more singing than performing?
I don’t know…it feels all over the place. Bits of singing, bits of buffoonery. It’s a thick hour.
On your resume, you have “balancing large objects on your face.” Do tell.
For some reason growing up I acquired the skill of balancing large objects on my face, anything from ladders and chairs to bicycles.
Will we see your balancing talents tonight?
I would be happy to. I love to show-off.
What’s next for you?
Maybe some Shakespeare on Broadway.
The musical director for the evening will be David Turner. The event takes place tonight, September 13, at 7 p.m. Tickets ($25 cover, $10 food/drink minimum) can be purchased here or by calling 212-581-3080.
