On Sunday, January 2, 2011, the hit revival of West Side Story will close on Broadway after 748 performances—but not before becoming the longest running incarnation of the musical, which will occur on December 20, surpassing the original production which ran for 732 shows.

The current revival of West Side Story, directed by Arthur Laurents with choreography by Joey McKneely, has had a good run, though. According to a press release, it “recouped its $14 million investment after running only 30 weeks (247 performances),” and it has won both a Tony (Karen Olivo as Anita) and a Grammy (Best Musical Show Album in 2010). A nationwide tour will also begin later this month, stops in Detroit, Los Angeles, Orlando, Houston and Atlanta.

Broadway won’t be the same.
