Gotham Chamber Opera’s production of Il mondo della luna will take audiences to the moon and back—literally. Staged at the Hayden Planetarium in the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History, and presented in partnership with the American Museum of Natural History and the American Repertory Theater, Il mondo della luna (The World on the Moon) will transform the planetarium into an intimate opera house complete with a 180-degree dome that will house projections provided by NASA as Haydn’s favorite opera comes to life for audiences. Il mondo della luna, which is directed by Diane Paulus (director of Hair), will run January 19–28, 2010.
“This is Gotham’s grandest and most audacious production in our eight-year history. The combination of Haydn, the Hayden, Diane Paulus, and our incomparable lineup of singers and designers adds up to a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Neal Goren, Artistic Director and founder of Gotham Chamber Opera.
The story of Il mondo della luna centers around a nobleman whose refusal to allow his daughters to marry their true loves spurs some out of this world coercive tactics. The daughters, with the help of a fake astronomer and a sleeping potion, convince their father that he has been transported to the moon, a place where courtship practices are very different. Namely, women are allowed to choose their own husbands.
Il mondo della luna presents a rare opportunity to witness a collusion of celebrated elements. When the nation’s foremost opera company dedicated to producing rarely performed chamber operas from the Baroque era to the present uses innovative technology to present a classic Haydn piece, all staged by one of the world’s most celebrated directors, the result is sure to be luminous.
