Both members of the Extra Lens, formerly the Extra Glenns, are pretty fascinating guys:
Franklin Bruno has been a member of Nothing Painted Blue since the late 1980s, a band that’s never found the success of, say, Pavement, but still has a radically devoted following. Bruno is currently a visiting professor of philosophy at Bard College and has written reviews for the Village Voice and Time Out New York. He also maintains a blog, Nervous Unto Thirst.
John Darnielle is the do-it-all frontman of the Mountain Goats and is widely considered one of the best songwriters out there today (Sasha Frere-Jones once called Darnielle “America’s best non-hip hop lyricist”). He’s been recording as the Mountain Goats—with a variety of bandmembers, including Superchunk’s Jon Wurster—since 1991, and has since released 17 studio albums, including 2009′s The Life of the World to Come.
Together, they’re the Extra Lens, who have recorded sporadically since 1994. But now they’re releasing an album on Merge Records, Undercard, set to be released on October 19. They’re also hitting the road this fall, including an October 21 date at Mercury Lounge with John Vanderslice. Tickets, which cost $21.40, go on-sale today, Sept. 17, at noon.
