The Chamber Music Society’s Winter Festival: Beethoven Cycles is a series of six concerts featuring six quartets all happening in the month of February. The concerts’ quartets are some of the best in the world and will play the quartets of Beethoven throughout February.
The first in the series will take place February 5 at 7:30 and feature the Brentano String Quartet. Since its inception in 1992, the Brentano Quartet has appeared around the world. Named for Antonie Brentano, whom many scholars consider to be Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved,” the Brentano String Quartet will be performing String Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 127, String Quartet in F major, Op. 18, No. 1 and String Quartet in C major, Op. 59, No. 3, “Razumovsky”.
The second concert in the series will be performed by the Daedalus Quartet February 7 at 5 pm. Having served as the quartet-in-residence at both Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania, the Daedalus Quartet represents the future of string ensembles. February 9 at 7:30 will feature a concert by the Borromeo Quartet playing String Quartet in D major, Op. 18, No. 3, String Quartet, Op. 133, “Grosse Fuge” and String Quartet in F major, Op. 59, No. 1, “Razumovsky”.
The fourth program in the Beethoven String Quartet Cycle will feature the Pacifica Quartet, Musical America’s 2009 “Ensemble of the Year.” They also received the 2009 “Best Chamber Music Performance” Grammy Award, making their concert one of the most highly anticipated of the series. The concert will take place February 19 at 7:30 pm.
Rounding out the cycle are performances by the St. Lawrence String Quartet and the Miró Quartet. On February 21 at 5 pm the St. Lawrence String Quartet, with two decades of performance experience, will delight audiences with its still spontaneous sounds. The Miró Quartet will perform February 23 at 7:30 for the last of The Chamber Music Society’s Winter Festival: Beethoven Cycles concerts. All concerts will take place at Alice Tully Hall.
