MCC Theater Presents The Pride

Alexi Kaye Campbell’s The Pride is a debut of emotionally mind-blowing proportions. Critically well received in its London debut (The Pride has already received The Whiting Award, a national U.K. playwriting prize; the Critics Circle’s Most Promising Playwright Award; and a 2009 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement), the play, presented by the MCC Theater, is set to make its American debut at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher St,). Performances begin January 27 and continue through March 20, 2010. Opening night for The Pride is set for Tuesday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m.

In its American premiere, director Joe Mantello (Glengarry Glen Ross, Take Me Out) has brought power players to fill the roles in the time-bending drama. Featuring actors Hugh Dancy (Adam, Journey’s End), Adam James (Last Chance Harvey), Andrea Riseborough (Happy Go Lucky) and Ben Whishaw (Bright Star, Brideshead Revisited), the cast list reads like a veritable who’s who of young British actors, with Riseborough and Whishaw making their New York stage debuts.

The Pride examines the complex romantic relationships of Oliver (Whishaw), Philip (Dancy) and Sylvia (Riseborough) as they time warp from 1958 to the present—and back again—exploring the repressive elements of the past and the predicaments that present-day passions can present. The play is an erotic time-warp that is as much intense character study as it is historical and societal commentary.

Performances are Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 8: p.m., and Sundays at 2 and 7 p.m. Individual tickets will go on sale Tuesday, December 15, 2009. Special Two-Play season subscriptions are now available by visiting www.mcctheater.org or by contacting Ticket Central directly at www.ticketcentral.com or calling 212-279-4200.
