In 1980, Frank Abagnale, Jr. wrote Catch Me If You Can, his autobiography about how he managed to con his way to $2.5 million—before turning 21 years old. In 2002, Steven Spielberg directed the film version of Catch, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks and Amy Adams. In 2011, Abagnale’s life story will come to Broadway.

Lead producers Margo Lion and Hal Luftig announced earlier today that the Jack O’Brien-directed Catch Me If You Can will open on Broadway (as a musical) in previews on March 7, 2011, with an official opening set for April 20 at a theatre to be announced. Terrence McNally wrote the book, with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and cheoregraphy by Jerry Mitchell.

I hope this is only the beginning of Spielberg films coming to Broadway. Tell me you wouldn’t pay top dollar for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Dance.
