Wavves
Music Hall of Williamsburg, 7:30 p.m.
King of the Beach is one of the year’s best albums, and next week Wavves’ girlfriend, Bethany from Best Coast, is coming to town, too. Right now, they’re the King and Queen of Indie, taking the title from, um, Zooey and Ben? Jenny and Johnny? Is Liz Phair still the Indie Rock Queen? No, she’s not. For a fun five minutes, check out this Wikipedia page of “honorific nicknames of popular music.” Who knew Jully Black was the Queen of Canadian R&B? No you didn’t. $15
Wednesday, September 22
Laurie Anderson
BAM, 7:30 p.m.
All this week and next, Laurie, wife of Lou, is performing “Delusion,” which, according to BAM, is a “phantasmagoric world made up of short plays…activated by brooding, deeply affecting music redolent with Tibetan temple horns and Arabic strings, performed by Anderson on electronically enhanced violin with supporting virtuoso musicians.” $20-$60
Thursday, September 23
LCD Soundsystem and Sleigh Bells
Wellmont Theatre, 8 p.m.
We’re pumped to (finally) see LCD during Saturday’s Virgin Fest (see below), considering we missed their mini-residency at Terminal 5 earlier this year. But considering how often James Murphy talks about this might be the end of LCD—there’s little to no chance we’ll ever see a fourth album—it seems odd that they haven’t scheduled a New York date yet. Jersey, yes. Philly, yes. Baltimore, yes. Maryland, no. A secret show perhaps? $33
Friday, September 24
Pavement
Central Park, 5:30 p.m.
Speaking of lasts, there’s a just good chance this is Pavement’s last show in New York. Ever. Get tickets on Craigslist before it’s too late. $48.35
Saturday, September 25
Virgin Mobile FreeFest
Merriweather Post Pavilion, 10 a.m.
As previously mentioned: LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., Pavement, Yeasayer, Ludacris, Sleigh Bells, Joan Jett, Jimmy Eat World and many more. $125
Sunday, September 26
They Might Be Giants
Town Hall, 12:30 and 3 p.m.
Although I don’t have kids, I can imagine it’s tough to find music that both parent and child both enjoy. None of that Jonas Brothers shit, thank you very much. Luckily for the sanity of everyone, They Might Be Giants have started releasing albums intended for kids but that are witty enough for mom and dad to enjoy, too (although I think kids would also like their previous material, such as Apollo 18). Today, they’re performing two shows at Town Hall at the matinee-friendly times of 12:30 and 3 p.m. I can only assume they’ll take everyone out for drinks after the gigs. Drinks of milk, that is. $35.20
