Today is a busy one for Broadway. Three major productions begin their previews tonight:

1. La Bête, starring Mark Rylance, Joanna Lumley and David Hyde Pierce and directed by Matthew Warchus, comes to the Music Box Theatre (239 W. 45th St.) following a successful London engagement. This is the first major revival of David Hirson’s Olivier Award-winning comedy, about a street performer squaring off with a classical writer, and it received fantastic reviews when performed across the pond. No reason to think it won’t translate here, especially with Hyde Pierce’s dry delivery.

2. This is a good year to be a Green Bay Packers fan. In real life, your team is one of the best in football, led by QB Aaron Rodgers, and in theater life, a new play is opening today at Circle in the Square Theatre (1633 Broadway) about your most famous coach: Vince Lombardi. In Eric Simonson’s simply titled Lombardi, directed by Thomas Kali, a sports reporter begins living with the Coach and his wife to do research for a magazine article, only a few years before Lombardi would pass away from stomach cancer. Dan Lauria, best known as the dad on The Wonder Years, plays the Packers legend, who coached the team from 1959-1967 and now has a trophy named after him.

3. It wasn’t known until somewhat recently if Laura Linney would return to her role in Time Stands Still; after all, the actress has a hit show on Showtime (The Big C) and it might be tough to fit both into her schedule. But somehow, she did, and Linney, along with Brian d’Arcy James and Eric Bogosian, will return to the play—about two people having interesting careers settling into a more conventional life—at the Cort Theatre (138 W. 48th St.) after a summer hiatus.
