New York and California square off at Le Grand Fooding
Chang v. Patterson

Ever since Woody Allen said, “I don’t want to move to a city where the only cultural advantage is being able to make a right turn on a red light,” there’s been a rivalry between California and New York. Things got even more interesting in the coast rivalry when Momofuku’s chef David Chang told the audience at last year’s New York Wine & Food Festival that “fuckin’ every restaurant in San Franciso is just serving figs on a plate with nothing on it.” Cali-based chefs got pissed and before long, others were weighing in, including Daniel Patterson (“David who?”) and Rich Torrisi (“When Sinatra said, ‘If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere,’ he wasn’t talking about San Fran!”).
Luckily, someone thought of a good way to tap into this psuedo-hate: have 12 chefs from both California and New York compete against one another to determine who’s food is best, with proceeds going towards Action Against Hunger. Such an event—called Le Grand Fooding—occurs September 24 and 25 at PS1 Contemporary Center.
New York’s chefs: David Chang, Dan Barber, Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi, Nate Appleman, Brian Leth and Rob Newton.
San Fran’s chefs: Daniel Patterson, Mourad Lahlou, Laurence Jossel, Jeremy Fox, Melissa Perello and James Syhabout.
Outside of the main competition, there will also be a pizza cook-off, champagne from Veuve Clicquot, cocktail competition (NY’s Jim Meehan v. SF’s Erick Castro) and music from our Grizzly Bear and their Dan the Automator. For more information, including how to purchase $50 tickets, please click here.
(And not to be totally bias, but: GO NEW YORK!)
