Now that he’s no longer being mistaken for Merton (or was Merton mistaken for Ben Folds? Still not sure…), we can get back to mentioning Ben Folds in terms of musical greatness, not 15 minute internet fame. Ever since 1995′s Ben Folds Five, Folds has been making music equal parts funny (Rockin’ the Suburbs), depressing (Kylie from Connecticut) and funny/depressing (Song for the Dumped). Oh yeah, and that Brick song, too (which took me forever to really get).

Today, Folds is releasing Lonely Avenue, a collaboration album on Nonesuch Records with Nick Hornby, author of About a Boy and High Fidelity. Each of the songs is a musical short story, with music and vocals by Folds and lyrics by Hornby. And on October 12, both musician and author will co-headline Liner Notes, an event at Housing Works Bookstore CafĂ© that explores “the cross-pollination of music and literature while raising funds for Housing Works, a New York-based HIV/AIDS service organization.” The event is presented by SPIN and will be moderated by deputy editor Steve Kandell.

Tickets for the October 12th 7 p.m. event cost $35 and can be purchased here.
