To ballet fans the world over, the name Angel Corella means both a seasoned artistry and the sweet exhilaration of technical precision. One of American Ballet Theatre’s stars, he is a dynamo in the dance world. At the very least, and even to the not-so-regular ballet-goer, his name should ring a bell. It is with this established presence that he premieres his company, Corella Ballet Castilla y León, to American audiences.

At the New York City Center March 17–20, the program includes both U.S. and world premiere works, including Corella’s choreographic debut, “String Sextet,” a pas de deux by María Pagés, “Epimetheus” by Russell Ducker, and “DGV” by Christopher Wheeldon.

Corella Ballet is Spain’s only classical ballet company, and offers a wide range of neoclassical, classical and contemporary repertory. Mr. Corella, who is the artistic director and a Principal Dancer, founded the company. Fourteen company members will be dancing in the four performances and two programs at the City Center. The U.S. debuts include: “String Sextet,” which had its 2009 world premiere in Barcelona, is a full company piece choreographed by Angel Corella to Tchaikovsky’s String Sextet, “Souvenir of Florence” Op. 70; and “Epimetheus,” a piece by company member Russell Ducker that premiered in 2009 at La Granja-Spain. The work uses “The Music of the Spheres” by composer Mike Oldfield.

The season’s world premiere is a pas de deux by distinguished flamenco dancer María Pagés, and will be performed by Angel Corella and Carmen Corella (his sister). Appearing on both programs is Wheeldon’s “DGV” (DANSE á GRAND VITESSE) set to the music of Michael Nyman’s “MGV” (Musique á Grande Vitesse). When the work premiered on London’s Royal Ballet in 2006 it received critical acclaim and was nominated for “Best New Dance Production“ at the 2007 Olivier Awards.

Corella Ballet’s season at the City Center is sure to be a must see by fans of Mr. Corella, but with programs full of debuts and new works, it may just prove to be its own star. For tickets and program information visit nycitycenter.org
