Bubbles Might Burst, But Memories Won’t
The Gazillion Bubble Show delights children of all ages in New York
Bubbles were a staple of almost everyone’s childhood. We bought cartons of foamy liquid, and upon dipping a plastic wand into the mixture, blew round, floating orbs into the air, which dazzled our young minds before the transient objects burst and disappeared. Like all bubbles, just soap and air, those of The Gazillion Bubble Show may eventually pop, but the memories of the performance will remain with children from eight to eighty.
Now playing at New World Stages (340 W. 50th St.), The Gazillion Bubble Show exploits the creative use of bubbles to its fullest; there may not be a “gazillion” present in the performance, but there are certainly a lot, in every conceivable shape and size. The show intermittently features Fan Yang, Anna Yang, Jano Yang and Deni Yang, “Bubble Artists” who’ve performed around the globe and hold 16 bubble-related Guinness World Records, and have now arrived to bring their magic to New York.
The Yangs make the most of their 85 minutes on stage, crafting bubbles of seemingly thousands of varieties, using lights and lasers to add layers of texture to the performance. Eschewing the typical standard home “bubble wand,” the Yangs use massive customized wands and instruments to create their menagerie of bubbles.
For anyone who doubted that bubbles could make effective performance art, The Gazillion Bubble Show definitely shows them up; the Yangs have turned this simple form into a kaleidoscope of shifting shapes and colors. Some of the exotic bubble constructions audiences can look forward to seeing include: multi-shaped bubbles crafted within bubbles; bubbles created around lasers; bubbles made of smoke and vapor; a flow of bubbles raining down upon the audience; and even human-sized bubbles, which are blown around the audience members who’ve been brought onstage. The Gazillion Bubble Show is truly a mesmerizing and mirthful experience that you’ll find will delight not only the children in the audience, but awaken the inner-child in the adults present as well.
