Menopause: The Musical at SOPAC
| | More
This is a story about coming-of-age, one that depicts women of different walks of life, whose paths cross at a department store. Eventually, they open up to each other and share their thoughts about their experiences. The women of different fashion tastes and lifestyles speak of love, life and sex. Sounds like something out of the Sex and the City? Think of Carrie Bradshaw and her friends—during menopause. That’s what this daring musical is about. The celebrated musical of the over-50 crowd, Menopause: The Musical, is making a comeback, running from September 17-October 31 at the South Orange Performing Arts Center.
During the 90-minute production, four women—stay-at-home wife (Marsha Waterbury), work-driven professional (Fredena Williams), soap opera star (Kathy St. George) and earth mother (Sandy Rosenburg)—sing their frustrations out with classic female-empowering tunes from the past decades. One of the musical’s producers, Kathi Glist, had this to say about the show: “It resonates with just about any woman over 40, but it’s enjoyed by all. And the younger women laugh just as hard.” She adds, “It’s a party every night!”
Writer/Producer Jeanie Linders understands the sensitivity concerning this subject. She says, “When women talk about this matter to their girlfriends, all your friends say, ‘Yeah, yeah me too,’ but when you’re sitting in an audience with 300 women saying, ‘That’s me onstage,’ that’s when you really know you’re not alone going through this part of your life and the second part of your life will be just as meaningful as the first part.” From hot flashes, memory loss, eating binges and night sweats to mood swings and wrinkles, Menopause: The Musical touches upon issues that go along with the changes every woman goes through.
