When you hear an origin story like that of Christopher Owens, front man of the San Francisco-based band Girls, you can’t help but be intrigued. I mean, you find out a guy was raised in a cult and you have to be thinking, “What kind of music is he producing?” The product of a secluded upbringing with movie soundtracks as the only musical link to the outside world will surprise you. Together with fellow band member Chet JR White, Christopher Owens explores all genres of music as seen in their album, album, released last September. This exploration of sound results in a great juxtaposition of a 1950s beach music and modern lyrics. Every song on the album is tied to the theme of great vibes, which is, at some points, contradicted by the melancholy lyrics, commonly found in today’s pessimistic youth.
This underlying gloomy subject matter that is so often portrayed in their lyrics should be expected from a guy like Christopher Owens. One need only delve deeper into his past to unlock the longing he has for the green on the other side. Owens traveled around a lot after he left the Children of God community at the age of sixteen. In the song “Lust for Life”, one of my favorites, he lists things that he wishes he had—one being a father; which isn’t surprising since Owens’ father abandoned his family. All in all, this band has its fair share of interesting stories to tell.
I, for one, can’t wait until April 3, when Girls perform at Webster Hall. Their music is perfect for that venue. The age of its patrons along with its dark halls will compliment the Girls qualities well. Save me a space, and buy me a beer. If you want to check out Girls, the band will be performing at 7 pm in the Grand Ballroom at Webster Hall (125 East 11th Street, New York, NY); visit websterhall.com for more information.
