Nikki Yanofsky bursts onto the scene
I love riding my bike up and down Broadway. And, like every other musician, my favorite place to ride past is Lincoln Center. There’s the Lincoln Center Theater, Julliard and of course, Jazz at Lincoln Center. I happened to notice, in my travels, that Canadian jazz/pop icon of 2010 Nikki Yanofsky is going to be at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in Jazz at Lincoln Center for the release of her upcoming album Nikki. To those people who didn’t see her performance at the 2010 Olympics where she sang both the Canadian and American national anthems, Nikki is a vocal powerhouse. She has great strength and control, and has really come far for a 16-year-old. She has recorded and performed with renowned musicians such as Marvin Hamlisch, The Count Basie Orchestra and fellow Canadian Celine Dion.
Her new album to which we all will be paying homage this May 4, consisst of some of Nikki’s first original songs, which she wrote in collaboration with Jesse Harris, most know for his work with Norah Jones; as well as Ron Sexsmith and one of my favorite musicians, Feist. Fourteen-time Grammy award-winning producer Phil Ramone produced this debut.
Nikki has become a Canadian national treasure after singing the Olympics anthem written for her by Stephan Moccio Alan Frew, which will also appear on her new album. She has also been breaking records in the jazz industry in Canada for years, starting with being the youngest nominee in the Juno awards, as well as the youngest to record for Verve Records when she recorded “Airmail Special” on 2007 the Ella Fitzsgerald tribute album We All Love Ella: Celebrating the First Lady of Song.
I had the opportunity to listen to the album and you can really tell that they pulled out all the stops with this one. You can’t go wrong throwing such a talented line-up in a room. So, if you want to hear the result of Nikki’s hard work come down to Jazz at Lincoln Center and come check out her release party, it’s going to be $30 to get in ($15 with applicable student I.D.)
